About Me the Toad

I Want to "Toad" - you a Story

        Let me start out with a story about how I got the name Toad in the first place. The very first time I was called a Toad was in the Air Force when I was station at Loring Air Force Basein Limestone, Northern part of Maine. I was in aircraft maintenance on B 52's and KC 135 Tankers. Well it was a cold but sunny winter day and driving along the flight line with a pilot. He saw several airmen sweeping the newly fallen nights snow off the top of one of the B-52's he flew.

        Since Vietnam was in full swing all the Buffs were painted camouflage green. From a distance of several hundred yards he could see all the green clad airmen moving all over the top surfaces. He said that they looked like a bunch of toads on a lilly pad. We were proud to be called Toady's.
        The next time was several years later when I was in with the Seminole County Fire Department, I was at a hazardous materials class. We had spent most of the day talking or I should say listening to the instructor talk about the dangers of hazardous materials and how to identify them.

We learned how to handlethem when found on the scene. There was discussions and videos on what other departments have run into and what happened when things went wrong and when they went right,

We where going over the different equipment need to handle a spill or a leak of liquids and gases. The instructor brought out this suit case and when he opened it , we saw the old military style hazmat suit. He grabbed me and said that I was the demo and started to assist me in putting on this suit.

We were learning to get into the rubberized olive drab hazmat suit. I had on my air pack and mask and was in the process of pulling on the one size fits all suit, a 6' 5" man can ware this same suit. After it was on my 5' 8" frame, all but the hood was in place, some one in the class yelled out "Look it's a Toad" and it's been my nickname in the fire department ever since.

My family is very special to me.

Myself;

   I was born in Buffalo, NY in 1945. I grew up around firefighters as fire fighting is in my blood. You see my dad was a firefighter from 1940 to 1932 when he had to quit and take a job with the New York Central Railroad for a better income to raise his growing family. Heck that is a whole different story, to see more on it visit the link on the main menu called My Hero, My Dad.

   We are strong Irish on my dads side and Irish German on my mothers side. Even after leaving the FD my dad would take us to visit different fire houses and our favorite place the Buffalo Fire Boat. Even got to ride on it several times.
   I went to Blessed Trinity Catholic school for a couple years then transferred to PS #61. I was in the very last eight grade graduation class of PS #61 in 1961. They started middle school after that year.. I went to Bennett HS for four years and majored in Art . After graduating in 1965 I tried to join the Buffalo FD but there was a two to three waiting list. That summer I tried to get the job i had the summer before with the city as a lifeguard, but applied to late. My girlfriend Mary Saldutto's dad worked at a Mobile gas station and I got that job for the summer.
   I received my draft notice in July to report to the Army, I did not want to join the Army and go to Vietnam carrying a gun like my best friend Duane Heiser did. I wanted to join the Navy and get into submarine school, but they where pushing flight deck crews so I talked to the Air Force recruiter and joined that day. I was going to go to school to be a telephone installed.
   I spent eight years in the USAF, (1965 - 1973) which the first five years where in communication construction. I built antenna systems, antenna towers, radar sites, etc. Then I cross trained into aircraft maintenance on B-52 bombers and KC-135 in air refueling tankers.
   After i was released from the USAF, I became a Firefighter/EMT with the City of Winter Park, Florida in March 1973 -1975. Two years later 1975, I joined the Seminole County Department of Public Safety, EMS/Fire Rescue Division which was formed on Oct 1,1974. I retired June 30th, 2003, with 30 years in the fire service.

   I took up golf over ten years ago, and got bit by the Golf Bug. I shoot in the middle 80's to low 90's.(Yea Right! mostly in the 90's. I play every weekend that I can. My golf partner is P.J.'s husband Larry.
